The High Line

This urban park has become a firm favourite of mine for a Sunday meander of evening exploration.

Built upon an old railway line, The High Line is pretty unique. Having once been used to keep the city's industrial and meatpacking district ticking over, the tracks were eventually abandoned and faced destruction.

While some parts were brought down, a section was salvaged and an array of overgrowth formed over the tracks. Today it is groomed and preened to maintain the botanical wonderland that has formed.

Running from the swanky meatpacking district to West 34th street, aside from botany, the tracks now hold a variety of art pieces with uber expensive hotels and exclusive residences lining the sides.

Nicole Kidman, Kelsey Grammar and Diane von Furstenberg are just a few of the well-known personalities who have set up home to make the High Line their back garden.

Aside from celeb homes, the High Line holds the notable piers 54, where the Titanic's rescue boat, the Carpathia, docked with the survivors, and pier 59  where the Titanic would have docked had it made it to New York.

Creating a bit of an eyesore across the High Line is the The Standard Hotel. Grey and dank in its 1960s structure, this is a top hotel popular with exhibitionists. It's also pretty well known as the location Jay-Z and Solange had their set two elevator fight.

Just a walk along the High Line gives you a burst of culture and history all with a rather quirky edge. The invention of the Oreo, designer studios, uranium warehouses, a church, the 10th avenue outlook...a walk here can turn into an afternoon of adventure, art and glamour.
