Get Fit, Have Fun: Color Run

We all need a little shove sometimes in the direction of the treadmill. More often than not, sitting on the couch with a packet of oreos sounds more appealing than a hardcore gym session.
However, showing that exercise can be fun, The Color Run is making waves and is responsible for all those colourfully annoying posts on your facebook feed. It seems to be 2014’s must attend event drawing in the thousands with the claim that it is "the happiest 5k on the planet".
To avoid the stereotypical all-american dietary habits, somewhere on my NYC bucket list I’d promised myself I’d stay fit and take part in some kind of NYC fitness event. While I undoubtedly have the stamina for a marathon, on this occasion I was all about the 5k.

The Color Run is the 'original paint race' and aims to show people that happiness and healthiness exist by bringing together whole communities. While there are many similar get fit events there is no other that involves teams of people throwing paint at runners as they race. The result: crowds of multi-coloured, sweat bearing, life loving ravers.
Founded in 2011, it is a phenomena that has swept the globe from Belgium to Australia, but I decided to take part in Brooklyn.
I chugged my way across the deserted air field with the scores of fellow runners as together we were assaulted with a multitude of rainbow paint. While I'm not sure how many calroies were burnt or how intensive the exercise really was, there was a lot of laughing and a strong feel good factor to enjoy.
Once completed, the race ended with DJs and promoters creating a festival-like ambience to carry through that healthy happy vibe.
The Color Run is all about having fun and showing that exercise can be enjoyable. While someone should tell that to my body conditioning coach I’ll take the cheesy message and keep jogging on.
