If there’s a special day, a holiday or even a minor facebook event for it, the city of New York is fully committed to representing. St. Paddy's, Earth Day, whatever it is the crowds come out to support the event on the agenda, in this case International Pillow Fight Day.
A random and truly original event, the pillow fight is in its seventh year and gains more traction with each passing party.
What: This is the brain child of Kevin Bracken, an event organiser and owner of The Urban Playground Movement, whose previous experiences have captured the attention of many.
Ethos: They work off the idea that all urban spaces should be appreciated and used as if they were playgrounds. Basically, it’s the idea of embracing the amazing spaces cities have to offer and getting out there to enjoy them instead of becoming slaves to our screens.
The Pillow Fight is just another way of encouraging people to come together in a random and original way to have a bit of fun.
When: On the first Saturday of each April, thousands flock on a what people pray will be a glorious sunny day to well, basically, erm, beat each other with pillows.
Who: If you're willing to travel on the subway, haul around a pillow and then donate it at the end of the day to the city's homeless (although that part is optional) you attend the park at 3pm and begin boshing away.
Where: Washington Square Park is located downtown between 4th and 8th street. With a vast open space it makes for the perfect pillow-pounding spot.
Numbers: Thousands hit the ‘going’ button on the official event facebook page but it’s hard to track just how many attend the feathery fiesta. However, on site the park brims with little room to move so we'll just say a lot.
Injuries: With many a pent up papa and stressed out student attending, a little aggression can be expected but generally it's all peace, love and party so you can leave the helmet at home.
